Work permits and work in Canada

There is no single Canadian “work visa.” Work authorization depends on the worker’s circumstances, the job and the type of work permit available. In employer-supported cases, the employer may have to complete steps before the worker applies.

01

Employer-specific work permits

An employer-specific permit authorizes work under specified conditions. Depending on the situation, the employer may need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), or the position may qualify for an exemption.

02

Open work permits

An open work permit is not tied to one employer, but it is available only in defined situations under immigration law or policy.

03

LMIA-exempt work permits

An LMIA exemption does not necessarily mean the employer has no role. Employer compliance or Employer Portal steps may still be required.

04

Extensions and status questions

A permit approaching expiry cannot always be renewed on the same basis. The next application may depend on the employer, permit type, LMIA or exemption, changes in employment, current status and timing.

05

Questions that may need review

  • Is a work permit required?
  • Is it employer-specific or open?
  • Is an LMIA required, or is there a valid exemption?
  • Has the employer completed the required steps?
  • Do the job offer and documents match?
  • Can the application be made from the applicant’s location?
  • Is current status valid, and what happens if it expires?

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a Canadian job offer enough to get a work permit?

No. The correct immigration process must still be identified, and the employer may have obligations before the worker applies.

Can any worker apply for an open work permit?

No. Open work permits are available only in specific situations under current immigration rules or policies.
