Study in Canada

Receiving an acceptance from a Canadian school is important, but it does not automatically result in a study permit. The immigration application must also address the requirements that apply to the student and the proposed studies.

01

Study permit applications

Requirements can change, including documents connected to the province or territory and type of program. Depending on the case, the application may require a close look at the school and program, previous education, reasons for the program, finances, immigration history, employment, family circumstances and current filing requirements.

02

Extensions and student status

If you want to continue studying beyond the validity of your permit, timing matters. If status has already been lost, restoration rules may need to be considered rather than assuming the permit can simply be renewed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a school acceptance letter guarantee a study permit?

No. Admission and approval of a study permit are separate decisions. The application must satisfy the requirements in force when it is filed.

Should the website list every current study-permit exemption?

No. Those rules can change. Current requirements should be assessed for the individual case rather than relying on a permanent list.
